The geothermal development in Dürrnhaar, located within the Kirchstockach licence field, was initiated in 2004.
In order to complete the two deviated wells, three companies-RENERCO AG, SachsenFonds GmbH and HOCHTIEF AG-joined forces and formed Süddeutsche Geothermie-Projekte GmbH & Co. KG (SGG).

The project reached its most significant milestone with the completion of the wells Dürrnhaar Gt1 and Gt2a between November 2007 and March 2009.
In 2016 the sale of the project to the Stadtwerk München (SWM) was confirmed.
